The Night Life had its world premiere April 25, 2004 at the sixth
Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival,
where it received First Prize in the Animation category of the
PlanetOut.com Short Movie Awards.
The other PlanetOut.com winners were:
Little Black Boot
(Grand Prize),
Seventy
(Comedy),
Isn't It Obvious
(Documentary),
Stand By
(Drama),
and
bobbycrush
(Experimental).
You can see QuickTime versions of all the winning films at the
2004
PlanetOut.com awards site.
Several of the winners picked up their awards in person.
From left to right:
Tony Osso (Stand By),
Steve Hutton (The Night Life),
Carol Coombes (MGLFF program director and ultimate fashion accessory),
and
Honey Labrador (Little Black Boot).
There's a scene at the end of Roman Holiday
where the Princess (Audrey Hepburn) is asked which of the cities she visited is her favourite.
Her advisor whispers "each city in its own way" and she starts to say it, but then she says "Rome".
Although each film festival is wonderful in its own way, it's hard to imagine one that would
be more enjoyable to attend than Miami.
After two days of sun and sand and smooth jazz, pastels and palm trees, and being driven around by
"handsome host Jeff Weinstock" (that's apparently his official title),
life seems pretty sweet.
The Night Life was included in Indiewire's coverage of the festival, both in the
photo spread
and the
writeup.
