Interview with Michael De Boer (animator)

What is your background?

I studied graphic arts at the University of Guelph, and then studied animation at Seneca College.

How did you get involved with The Night Life?

I wanted to get some real experience as an animator. My friend Greg [Duke, the director] introduced me to Steve [Hutton, the writer/producer] and told me about their crazy idea for a gay zombie vampire film-noir comedy. It seemed like there would be a lot of blood, guts, and gore. That appealed to me.

Was the experience what you expected?

It took a lot longer! I'm naturally optimistic, and thought I could get it done in 6 months.

What are your major influences?

I watch a lot of cartoons and read a lot of comic books. I like being able to do the things that you can't do in live action. As for movies, can I say Troma?

Sure.

I love Troma films. They are full of fun and sass. I hope we captured some of that in The Night Life.

Do you have a favourite character?

The vampire and the mummy. I think I got the most out of them.

The troll is certainly expressive.

He was a nice change from some of the more dramatic characters.

Is it hard to synch the lip movements to the dialog?

That's actually one of the easier things to do.

What was the hardest?

The dancing. I'm not a dancer or a choreographer.

Your wife is an actress and fashion model. Did she have any useful suggestions?

She gave me good advice about the lighting and movement. Also, it was good to get a different perspective.

Did you have anything to do with the marketing campaign for The Night Life?

I suggested the slogan: "Boy meets boy. Boy eats boy's brains." I'm not sure if they're going to use it.

What's next for you?

I'm hoping to have a career in animation. If anyone reading this is hiring...
