Past screenings

Fluff has now screened several times, with very little bloodshed.

Private screening: Toronto, November 2002

On November 24, 2002 we had a private screening for 200+ randomly selected people who happened to be friends and family of the cast and crew. Here are some of their comments:

  • "You have done a wonderful job!" - the lead actor
  • "You have a very funny movie!" - another actor
  • "I was really impressed!" - some guy named Bernie
  • "Very enjoyable film, very funny!" - the husband of an actress
  • "Although gay sex is not my preferred genre, I really enjoyed the movie!" - the producer's sister
  • "I enjoyed the private screening a lot!" - a guy who used to live in the producer's basement
Rainbow Reels

Sneak preview: Waterloo, March 2003

On March 16, 2003 Fluff was presented to the general public for the first time as part of the Rainbow Reels festival in Waterloo, Ontario. It was preceded by the shorts Ohm-Ma and Canada: Sperm Bank of Satan and followed by the Thai feature Iron Ladies.

Fluff was presented as a mystery screening, identified in the program only as "Sneak Preview of an Independent Canadian Queer Comedy". Fluff attracted a large and enthusiastic audience, including writer/producer Steve Hutton and several cast members.

Independence Seaport Concert Hall

World premiere: Philadelphia, July 2003

Fluff had its world premiere on July 16, 2003 at the Independence Seaport Museum, preceded by the short film A Nightmare on Castro St. This screening was part of the excellent Philadelphia International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. "Some people laughed a lot," reports director Gregory Duke, who fielded their questions with grace and style.

As a result of this festival, Fluff also got its first mention on indieWIRE and The Movie Times!

Southwest premiere: Austin, August 2003

Writer/producer Steve Hutton attended the scheduled screening at the Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival on August 23. Due to a major sound failure, the film was virtually unwatchable. Fluff was accompanied by the short films Stand By and Smoke Rings, which didn't suffer from the sound failure.

The aGLIFF staff corrected the sound problem and put on an additional *free* screening of Fluff a week later. We're told that this screening went very well. Thanks to aGLIFF for giving their members a chance to see the film as it was originally intended and to the incredibly accommodating Jim Benes for hosting Steve Hutton during his visit. (If you're going to aGLIFF, ask for Jim by name!)

Metropolitan 14, Austin
CineKink opening party

New York premiere: October 2003

On October 12, Fluff screened as part of CineKink, a film festival that explores and celebrates a wide diversity of alternative sexuality, preceded by the short films Gay Boyfriend and Traditional Family Vampires. See the Fluff CineKink press release (PDF).

The picture at the left (by Barbara Nitke) shows a scene from the star-studded opening party, with Fluff writer/producer Steve Hutton flanked by Isaac Steven Vaughan of the Fire Island Film & Video Festival and filmmaker Spencer Lee Schilly.

Pridefest

Utah State University: "the audience was laughing so hard you could barely hear the film"

On Friday the 13th of February, Fluff was shown in the Taggart Student Center auditorium at Utah State University as part of Pridefest 2004. This was Fluff's first and possibly only screening in the beehive state.

According to our spy at the festival, "The screening of Fluff went great! There were a few people in the audience that just didn't get it, but everyone else loved it. We explained why it was funny afterward... By the end of the film (during the finale) the audience was laughing so hard you could barely hear the film."

Triangle TV, Auckland

World television premiere: Auckland, February 2004

On Monday February 23, Fluff screened as part of the Triangle Television Gay Television Festival in Auckland, New Zealand.

2004 Pride International Film Festival

Asia premiere: Manila, August 2004

Fluff screened at the first Pride International Film Festival on Saturday August 28 along with the short films LTR, Fire Island Pines on $0 a Day, Just Like You Imagined, and Fotostar.

The festival was originally scheduled for November 2003, but had to be delayed until August 2004 due to financial problems. We salute the organizers of this festival who worked so hard to bring the best of contemporary gay and lesbian cinema to the Philippines!

Halifax, July 2005

Fluff was the feature attraction at the Reel Pride Film Festival in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It played along with the short films World's Worst Architecture, Darla's Goodbye, and The Night Life. Our spies tell us that the audience loved it!

Rainbow Reels

Salt Lake City, January 2006

Fluff was a feature presentation of the first-ever Salt Lake City Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. Fluff was held over for a second screening, as part of the "best of the fest" program!
